ATLANTA – Mississippi now has the nation’s highest teen birth rate, displacing Texas and New Mexico for that lamentable title, a new federal report says. Mississippi’s rate was more than 60 percent higher than the national average in 2006, according to new state statistics released Wednesday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The teen birth rate for that year in Texas and New Mexico was more than 50 percent higher.
More than a year ago, a preliminary report on the 2006 data revealed that the U.S. teen birth rate had risen for the first time in about 15 years. But the new numbers provide the first state-by-state breakdown.
The new report is based on a review of all the birth certificates in 2006. Significant increases in teen birth rates were noted in 26 states.
Some experts have blamed the national increase on increased federal funding for abstinence-only health education that does not teach teens how to use condoms and other contraception. They said that would explain why teen birth rate increases have been detected across much of the country and not just in a few spots.
I wonder what else might explain that..

Kids chant Assassinate Obama – 236.com – The Feed
Yup, that’s the state where I grew up, all right.  Red State Refugee isn’t just a tag line, it’s a badge of honor!
We are watching the Palin/McCain ticket self-destruct.

(September 24, 2008) – McCain’s Bottom Line: No Deal = No Debate
A senior campaign official says that McCain will NOT debate — no matter what — if Congress hasn’t reached an agreement on a bailout package.
The aide did not know whether Gov. Palin would attend Oct. 2’s vice presidential debate if Congress, by that point, still hasn’t reached a deal.
Barack, if he doesn’t show up on Friday, you show up anyway. Â Give a one-hour speech or take the questions from the moderators, and INSIST that they leave the empty podium standing where McCain should be.
Let the grumpy old man hold his breath and turn blue.
Daily Kos: Mid-afternoon thread
A picture is worth a thousand words. Â Or, perhaps ten cars, three scooters, a jet, and eight houses.

More than a few listeners have emailed me to say, “Thank you for reporting on John McCain’s history with the Keating Five scandal.” Â On the air I put it in my “Under the Radar” segment to note how this completely relevent story is being ignored my the MSM – the last major financial regulatory scandal in our nation’s history, which just happened to involve the GOP presidential nominee!
Seems like the Obama campaign has noticed, too, as per this press release:
Daily Kos: State of the Nation
Number of probing stories the NY Times has written over the course of the campaign about Barack Obama, his life, his religion, his childhood, his politics, his time in the state senate, his time in the U.S. Senate, his family, his religion, his friends, his fundraising and all other manner of associations: more than 40
Number of stories the NY Times has written over the course of the campaign about the last major financial regulatory crisis, resulting in a huge bailout, and which John McCain was centrally involved in with his political godfather Charles Keating: 0
Yeah, poor McSame doesn’t get treated fairly by the media, all right. Â His veep nominee, Mrs. Palin, hasn’t given a press conference in the 24 days she’s been a heartbeat away from a American Taliban wet-dream, and ol’ McPOW’s involvement in a deja-vu-times-ten scandal from the 1980’s is ignored.
It’s not just this issue. Â Think of any major Palin/McCain development and ask yourself, “How would this play if it were Obama/Biden?”…
- Obama’s oldest teen daughter announces a pregnancy out of wedlock with an African-American boy whose Facebook page describes himself as “proud to be a fuckin’ thug” who lives to “play hoops” and “hang out with the boys, shoot some shit and just chillin’ I guess’” who adds, “Ya fuck with me I’ll kick [your] ass”.
- Obama speaks to reporters and mixes up Sunni & Shia, thinks Czechoslovakia still exists, thinks he can fire the chariman of the SEC, and confuses President Zapatero of Spain with someone in Latin America, and can’t enunciate the Bush Doctrine.
- Obama’s wife had been a member of an African nationalist party that advocated secession from the Union.
- Biden had authored a bill to force women to pay for their own forensic examination “rape kits”.
- Obama ordered his wife and his campaign staff to ignore lawful subpoenas into an investigation of Obama’s abuse of the power of his senatorial office.
There are five to get you started. Â Lemme know if any of you come up with “A few mentions on the late-night comedy shows, but no serious MSM attention, keeping the race in the polls within 5% points” if Obama made any of the Palin/McCain gaffes.
OK, the rumor that Sarah Palin faked her pregnancy with fifth child Trig to cover for her 16-year-old daughter (who coincidentally was pulled from school for four or five months during Palin’s pregnancy) can be put to bed. Sarah Palin is the mother of Trig, and she did indeed have her water break in Dallas, then finish a 30-minute speech, then ride to the airport, then fly from Dallas to Seattle (because there’s no good hospitals in Dallas), then transfer over to the Seattle to Anchorage flight (because there’s no good hospitals in Seattle), then ride from the airport to Wasilla, AK to have her baby (because there’s no good hospitals in Anchorage), her fifth pregnancy, a high-risk pregnancy due to her age (43) and the baby’s condition (Down Syndrome) and the timing (five weeks premature). For a pro-baby mom, you sure put that fetus at risk for ten-plus hours, didn’t you?
We can put the rumor to rest because Sarah Palin, governor of Alaska, supporter of rapist’s reproductive rights, a strong believer in abstinence-only sex education and government-enforced procreation, just announced that her daughter (now 17) is pregnant.
To rebut rumors, Palin says daughter, 17, pregnant | U.S. | Reuters
ST. PAUL (Reuters) – The 17-year-old daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is pregnant, Palin said on Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.
Bristol Palin, one of Alaska Gov. Palin’s five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
Bristol Palin made the decision on her own to keep the baby, McCain aides said.
Uh, what do you mean Bristol made the decision on her own? She’s a minor. You’re the parent. You don’t believe there is any “choice” in this matter, so how could Bristol make “the decision?” (I suppose she means, “decided not to give the baby up for adoption.”)
“Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media, respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates,” the statement concluded.
By the way, Bristol, CT, is the home of ESPN. Sarah Palin was once a sportscaster who wanted to work for ESPN. And Levi? Bristol and Levi? Wonderful. Nice to see that abstinence-only education and top-notch pro-Jesus parenting paid off.
If you were listening to the show late and didn’t get the full scoop on Sarah Palin’s ethical problems, Talking Points Memo has a great post up explaining the situation clearly:
Talking Points Memo | Getting Real About Palin
We rely on elected officials not to use the power of their office to pursue personal agendas or vendettas. It’s called an abuse of power. There is ample evidence that Palin used her power as governor to get her ex-brother-in-law fired. When his boss refused to fire him, she fired him. She first denied Monegan’s claims of pressure to fire Wooten and then had to amend her story when evidence proved otherwise. The available evidence now suggests that she 1) tried to have an ex-relative fired from his job for personal reasons, something that was clearly inappropriate, and perhaps illegal, though possibly understandable in human terms, 2) fired a state official for not himself acting inappropriately by firing the relative, 3) lied to the public about what happened and 4) continues to lie about what happened.
KTUU.com | Alaska’s news and information source | Welcome to Alaska, Trig Paxson Van Palin
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin gave birth to her fifth child at about 6:30 a.m. Friday morning.
Trig Paxson Van Palin was born at Mat-Su Regional Hospital about one month before he was scheduled to arrive.
…Just yesterday, Palin was in Texas at a forum on energy with Texas Gov. Rick Perry and executives from four other states….The governor’s water broke during the energy conference but she stayed and gave a 30-minute speech before boarding an Alaska Airlines plane home to deliver the baby.
You’re 43. You’re pregnant with your fifth child. This is already a risky pregnancy. Your water breaks, one month premature.
So your pro-family, pro-child decision, taking into account your age and the surprise early delivery, is to finish a thirty-minute speech, ride to the airport, go through airport security to board a commercial jet, fly eight hours from Texas to Alaska, deplane, ride to the Mat-Su Hospital, and then give birth?
What, there are no decent hospitals in Texas?
The rumor mill has it that Gov. Palin is actually hiding the birth of her 16-year-old daughter’s child. Pictures of Mrs. Palin from Super Tuesday, where she should be six months pregnant, show absolutely no baby bump at all. The 16-year-old daughter was pulled out of school for months with a supposed case of “mono”.
Even if that’s not true, I still have to question Palin’s sense? Did she not endanger her own health and more importantly, the health of her child, by flying across the country during a high-risk pregnancy after your water breaks a month premature?
Furthermore, these days women of a certain age who are pregnant (especially with a fifth child) get all sorts of pre-natal care and examination, which would include an amniocentesis that could determine whether the fetus exhibits signs of things like Down’s Syndrome. Did Sarah Palin know she was pregnant with a Down’s baby and then put that pregnancy at risk?
Either Sarah Palin is lying about her infant’s parentage, or she exhibited some pretty horrible judgment by not safely giving birth in Texas. Given that she’s now made the pro-family decision to abandon her five-month-old special-needs infant in order to hit the campaign trail with McSame, I tend to believe the latter.
Somebody please give Rachel Maddow her own TV show. She and Keith Olbermann just demolished John W. McSame’s record on veteran’s affairs. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: the silver lining of the Cheneyburton Maladministration will be the end of the Republican Party being considered the “Support the Troops” / “Strong on Defense” party.
